I have a serious question about the pit for a musical. We have a musical once every three years and I'm not sure if I should do it. I play clarinet and my director made it seem like a bad idea to try out? Like I won't get to play. I have no idea how the pit works and google isn't exactly handy for it. Also, what kind of audition piece should I have? Its supposed to be about 60 seconds. thanks!
well, I have no idea what to audition with. The one time I did pit, I didn’t have to audition for it.
So firstly…pit will take up soooooo much of your time. So be prepared for that. And you will be haunted by the music FOREVER. Seriously…its been like 5+ years now since I was last in pit and I can still sing my parts from every single song.
I have no idea how much you’ll play as a clarinetist. That really depends on the musical. Its useful though if you can double on something (especially another woodwind)
Be prepared for nasty key signatures. Seriously. My old pit music would sit there and switch between 5 sharps and 5 flats constantly. It was horrid.
But all in all, pit is a lot of work…but can be a lot of fun. It depends a lot on what musical it is and the people you work with. Its certainly an experience you don’t forget.
For the person asking about pit: more than likely as a clarinet, they’ll play a good amount. I know almost all of the pits I was in, except for one, the band instruments usually led. I’m a violinist, and it was so much fun. Yeah, it takes up a lot of time, but its worth it. I have some life long friends and jokes that came from pit rehearsals. Its something I definitely recommend to any musician. :)
I feel bad asking this, but could you possibly promote music-confessions-4-you? It is a blog for confessions and stories all about band and choir and such. I'm having troubles thinking of stories and confessions of my own since I get no submissions. Thank you so much (:
You know you’re in a high school or university music ensemble when…hearing this song makes you want to stab yourself repeatedly and leave your stand partner the horrible fate of having to play the entire time.
How this song makes me feel when I have to play it:
OMG. THAT SONG IS THE WORST. I THOUGHT I WAS DONE WITH IT AFTER HIGH SCHOOl. HAHAH NOPE. IT CONTINUED TO HAUNT ME IN COLLEGE AS WELL.
